Jewelry Care

General Protection

  • Store jewelry separately in soft cloth wraps so it doesn't scrape other jewelry. Lay the necklaces flat to avoid kinks.
  • Wear Jewelry for appropriate occasions, avoid wearing jewelry when taking a shower, swimming, cleaning or doing any rough work.
  • Keep your jewelry away from chemicals like nail polish removers, perfume, make-up, hairspray and toothpaste. In other words, put the jewelry on last.
  • Clean your jewelry regularly using jewelry cleaners & polishing cloth.  Some people like to bring their jewelry back to the vendors for ultrasonic cleaning. Please avoid doing this too often as it will set the stones loose from its settings. Remember to read the manufacturers instructions.

Specific Care

Diamonds

Diamond is the hardest stone based on the Moh’s scale of hardness.  But if you hit a diamond hard, it will still crack.  Avoid placing two diamonds together as they will scratch each other and certainly it will scratch other stones.

Gold, Platinum & Silver

They score only 2 to 4 on the Moh's scale of hardness which is considered soft.  For comparison, sand is 7 on the Mohs scale, which means your precious metal is soft and they can be easily scratched.

Generally, the higher the carat weights of gold, the softer the metal, so a 18 karat gold is softer than a 14 karat gold.

Sterling silver should be stored in a pouch with seal as it will be less prone to tarnish.  To polish up, please use a soft cotton cloth to rub & buff the jewelry.

Gemstones

Different gemstones have different hardness.  The higher the Mohs scale number, the harder the stone.  Any gemstone with a rating of less than 7 is easily scratched, such as coral, opal, pearl, and turquoise.

Some stones are porous such as opal, pearl and turquoise, avoid placing them in water for too long.

Some gemstones’ color may change from extended exposure to sunlight.  For example: Amethyst, Aquamarine, Citrine, Kunzite, Rose Quartz and Smoky Quartz

Fashion Jewelry

Gold or Silver plated items vary considerably in quality.  Poor quality ones will only be coated once whereas better made products are usually coated up to 3 layers.  Therefore, they should be cared for as much as the fine jewelry because they get tarnished even more easily.
